HOUSTON PRIVATE SCHOOLS
When families talk about Houston private schools, many of them think of only eight or ten schools that traditionally have the most competition for admission. Actually, every neighborhood in Greater Houston has numerous excellent private schools, and there is one to fit the needs and interests of every learner. The key word is "fit". To do that, one must be well-acquainted with schools, have a thorough knowledge of the student, and consider the goals of the family for the child's education and social life.
When I visit schools, I look for subtle clues to what kinds of learners the schools really serve. Yesterday's schools were designed primarily for the predominantly competitive, verbal, auditory, sequential learner. Research tells us that today's learners come in a greater variety. If your student fits a learning style different from the "traditional" pattern, you can learn about what to look for in classrooms that would work well for your student by checking the ADDA-SR and Mel Levine web site links listed below. Many elementary schools in Houston have at least a few teachers who have received training in teaching reading from The Neuhaus Education Center, the most outstanding dyslexia resource center in the region. (See the link below.)
Also check the links to the National and Houston Area Indepedent Schools. The NAIS site provides helpful information about tuition plans and scholarships. The HAIS site provides a web page on many excellent Houston private schools. Be sure to check the date for the Private School Preview held every September. |

"I would like to see schools change in response to what we now know about the legitimate differences in learning that abound among students at every grade level in every community. A child's school experience is known to produce actual changes in brain function and anatomy. That fact alone would suggest that educators and parents are not just influencing the thought processes of our children but actually helping to construct their brains."
